The Motor: The Heart of a Cargo Bike

Why the motor matters more than the bike brand

The motor is the heart of an electric cargo bike. While the bike brand defines design and build quality, the motor determines how the bike feels, how easily it climbs, and how long the battery lasts.

Many people focus on the brand name when buying — but motor choice is more decisive. A Riese & Müller with a weak motor will feel worse than an unknown brand with an excellent motor.

In our catalog, four motors dominate: Bosch (38%), Shimano (13%), Bafang and Brose (5% each).

Bosch: The Industry Standard

Bosch is the workhorse of the German-speaking market. 38% of all cargo bikes in our catalog run Bosch motors.

What Bosch Does Well

Cargo Line 50 (500W, 50 Nm) — The entry-level option. Classic Bosch feel: linear, predictable. Ideal for city, flat terrain, smaller loads.

Performance Line CX 4.50 (500W, 90 Nm) — The sweet spot: power meets efficiency. Handles hills comfortably. Reliable with moderate loads.

Performance Line CX 4.50 P (500W, 100 Nm) — More powerful, smooth acceleration fully loaded. Popular for commercial use.

What Bosch Doesn't Do Well

Price: ~20% more than competitors. Innovation speed: Small improvements, no big leaps. Yamaha and Shimano are newer: If you want the latest tech, look elsewhere.

Shimano: The Quiet Performer

STEPS EP8 (500W, 70 Nm) — The "intelligent" motor. Sensor detects cadence and adapts support. Very efficient: you don't notice the motor — it flows with your pedal. Much quieter than Bosch.

STEPS E6100 (500W, 60 Nm) — Slightly weaker but significantly cheaper. Good for lighter loads and commuting.

Downside: Only 13% of our bikes run Shimano. Fewer service stations in Germany. Weaker climbing power with full loads.

Brose: The Up-and-Comer

Brose Drive S (500W, 90 Nm) — Very compact and lightweight. Torque comparable to Bosch CX, but sits lower and smarter. Good for handling and weight distribution.

Downside: Less long-term data. Service network is thin on the ground.

Bafang: The Value King

Bafang M600 (500W, 90 Nm) — Similar performance to Bosch CX, noticeably cheaper (15-25% savings). Robust and proven.

Downside: Image problem in Germany. Warranty and service not as established.
